FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions

We get quite a few questions on the daily. To help address some of the more routine questions, we put together a list of Q&As to help out. Please feel free to reach out if you have a questions not addressed here.

Can I rock these bearings without shields right out of the box?

Our bearings leave the lab pre-lubricated. We recommend using shields for at least the first two weeks of skating to allow the small amount of lube to subside. Afterwards, you are welcome to rock them without shields. It is important to note these are precision bearings so routine maintenance is important.

These bearings do not come with spacers. Don’t I need them?

Our bearings are high precision, deep groove radial bearings. This prevents alignment and wobble issues generally handled by the spacer. There are some force impact improvements that spacers can provide. To help alleviate force impact without the spacer, we designed a high strength but compressible composite cage to take on the impact. These are standard on all bearing models. If you absolutely need spacers, we recommend using spacers that come with the wheels and use wheels that are designed to hold the spacer securely in place. Most skateboard wheels are not even designed for proper spacer use. Improper wheel core-to spacer-to bearing matching on a high precision bearing can lead to premature damage of the bearing.

Can I use my truck axle to install the bearings into the wheel?

We strongly recommend using the right tool for the right job. Using a truck axle may not seat the bearing flush into the wheel seat. This can cause the bearing to roll awkwardly and/or to exhibit a slow spin. Best means is to use a bearing press to ensure the bearing is properly seated.

How often should I maintain/clean the bearings?

Much depends on how you skate, the environment on where you are skating, and if you are using shields or without shields. We generally recommend cleaning them when they start to noticeably slow down.

I’m ready to clean them, now what?

We have a detailed Instagram post on our recommended cleaning procedure. Check the link below.
Cleaning Procedure

Do I need to remove the wheel to add lubricant?

If you are rocking the bearings without shields, we would not recommend adding oil based lube to the bearings as it will attract road dust. If you are using the bearings with shields, there is a Micro-Ring at the base of the shield and inner ring that allows for a drop of lube into the bearing without removing the bearing from the wheel. For shielded bearings, only use the lubricant when the bearings start to run dry and become noisy.

How much lubricant should I use?

We recommend adding 2 drops after cleaning the bearings. Only one drop is needed for routine lubricant applications.

Just blasted through a massive water puddle and bearings are soaked, now what?

After the session, or as soon as possible, we recommend spinning the water out of the bearing and adding 1-2 drops of lubricant. If you used our StackZ lubricant, even better as it will lay a blanket of ceramic on the base for protection of the metal components. If you are skating them shieldless, we recommend spraying some high purity isopropyl alcohol into the bearing while in the wheel. This mixes with the water and allows the water to evaporate out more quickly.

If rocking the Fusion series bearings, no worries as the DMx coating offers unparalleled corrosion resistance and should not be impacted by the occasional puddle.

Can I use any lubricant on these bearings?

If you already have a lubricant, yes - you are welcome to use it on our bearings. On the flip side, our StackZ lubricant can be used on any bearing. We recommend giving StackZ a try. We promise you will like the performance it provides.

Do QUANTUM Bearings come with a warranty?

YES - We are very diligent in our quality and it shows in our bearings’ performance. At the same time, we are not perfect. The last thing we ever want to do is provide a fellow skater with a sub-par quality product. That’s not how we operate as people and that’s not how we run our business.

All of our bearing products are guaranteed for 6-months from the date of purchase against manufacturer defects in materials or craftsmanship.

Issues Not Covered:
- Failure due to lack of maintenance/cleaning
- Failure due to use of spacers
- Bent shields resulting from improper installation
- Rust from water damage (all models except for Fusions and Diamonds)
